Assessment without Levels
From September 2014, the Government made a huge change in the way that children in schools are to be assessed. This is to tie in with the New National Curriculum that started to be used by all schools at the beginning of the last academic year. This is a new way of thinking for schools and assessment will look very different to how it has been for the past 20 years.
The aim of this information on our school website is to give you some clear guidance about all the changes that are happening in education across the country and what that means for the children here at Smeeth Community Primary School.
The end of National Curriculum Levels
The Department for Education (DFE) decided that the children in Years 2 and 6 in 2015 would be the last pupils to be awarded a National Curriculum Level in their end of Key Stage tests (Summer 2015).
At Smeeth School, Years 1 to 6 are now being taught the New National Curriculum and assessed using the New Steps Assessment using emerging, expected and exceeding.
How will we report to Parents?
We will report to parents in the similar system used in the Early Years and Foundation Stage. This was to take the end of year expectations for each year group and to split this into 3 categories as follows:
- Emerging – the child has started to achieve some of the subject expectations for their age.
- Expected – the child has reached the subject expectations for their age and continues to acquire more.
- Exceeding – the child has securely acquired the subject expectations for their age and is applying their skills and knowledge across the curriculum.
Steps to Success Assessment
The DfE announced last year that there would no longer be National Curriculum levels and that schools would have to set up their own way of assessing pupils.
At Smeeth School we have chosen to use the Steps to Success Assessment..
The Steps to Success Assessment was developed by schools in Ashford and Dover. It uses the end of year descriptors in the New National Curriculum and breaks up the skills and knowledge into Steps. This allows pupils to identify what they have achieved and identifies their next steps to future learning.
The new Steps Assessment can be found in each pupil’s book. Please look at these at Parents Evening.
Year 1 – Steps 4, 5 and 6
Year 2 - Steps 7, 8 and 9
Year 3 – Steps 10, 11 and 12
Year 4 – Steps 13, 14 and 15
Year 5 - Steps 16, 17 and 18
Year 6 – Steps 19, 20 and 21
During the year, when we have conversations with you about your child’s progress you will be told whether your child is on track to meet the end of year expectations.
Future reporting to parents
It is statutory to report to parents three times a year, so as a school we have October and March Parent Evenings, Pupil Interim Reports in March and a Summary Report in July.
