Smeeth Community Primary School

Year 6 2022/23

The year 6’s have had a fantastic start to forest school, during the first sessions the physical boundaries were discussed along with how to keep safe during the forest school sessions.  The children have played nature based games where we have focused on migrating birds and food chains. Their independent time has been spent exploring and connecting to the natural environment within the Forest School site.  They have discovered several species of spider on the site and used the identification sheets to name them.  They have learnt how to safely climb trees ensuring three limbs are connected and ensuring the branches are able to be safely climbed. The hammocks, rope swings and slack lines have been popular with children persevering trying to get to the other end.  The tools have been used carefully and the children have had the opportunity to use the knives, palm drills, sawhorse and bow saws to craft items. With their increased knife control some of the children are beginning to use different cuts to make patterns along the sticks. The year 6’s will continue to have forest school until the end of year, where we will continue to support the children.
